Immigrant backlash could reach Statehouse

Indiana might be one of the next states to consider legislation that places the burden of screening illegal immigrants on business.

At least one such bill is likely to be introduced in the General Assembly, said George Raymond, an Indiana Chamber of Commerce lobbyist specializing in labor relations.

“It stands a fairly good chance,” Raymond said.

An Arizona law that went into effect Tuesday holds businesses accountable for hiring illegal immigrants. Businesses can lose their licenses for knowingly hiring the immigrants.

The Arizona law is being blamed for prompting a wave of layoffs as fearful businesses double-check employees’ status.

Colorado and Georgia have similar laws on the books.

In Indiana, such legislation likely would gain widespread support in both the House and Senate because Hoosiers are ranking immigration close to such hot-button issues as jobs and health care, Raymond said.

Passage would force businesses to look closely at immigration status while keeping another eye on avoiding discrimination lawsuits, he said.

Immigration in Indiana is exploding.

Indiana’s foreign-born population increased 41.3 percent, to 263,607, between 2000 and 2006, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Migration Policy Institute. That was enough to rank the state 10th in the nation.

However, the nonpartisan not-for-profit group did not specify how many of the immigrants are illegal.

Delph Creates More Problems Than He Solves

"Illegal immigration is illegal," said State Sen. Mike Delph, R-Carmel. "When we sweep over the rule of law and we raise these inflammatory issues like race and nationality, there is a corroding effect on our state's soul." Mike Delph should know that our nation and state have other laws as well that he ignores. Maybe he should study the anti discrimination laws concerning work, housing, & public assistance. Maybe he should study the E-Verify system that he wants to mandate upon employers. He may find it useful to know that the governments own study of the computer system is that it violates the accuracy requirements set in the federal 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act. (TWELVE years ago) Maybe he should quit ignoring the fact that the governments own study of the E-Verify database found that it was particularly bad at flagging LEGAL naturalized citizens and LEGAL foreign workers AS ILLEGAL! Maybe he should read the comments on this message board and recognize the support he is providing to hateful people and the unfriendly environment he is promoting.

Want to deal with the problem?

As a resident of Southern CA, as well as an activist against illegal immigration and open US borders/ports, I have searched for a solution to the invasion of our sovereign nation by millions of unknown, unvetted, mostly third-world foreigners. I have learned that there now is no "quick" or "easy" answers to this attack on America by not only foreigners but our own government! I have made a conscious decision to work for Dr. Ron Paul in his quest to, at the very least, shine a light on the treasonous agenda of our government at every level...from local, through state and federal governments. I urge all concerned Americans to visit Dr. Ron Paul's website at: www.ronpaul2008.com. I am ready for change. Just as the candidates say, what we need for this country is CHANGE. However, it must be thoughtful and complete change, free of the same old DC puppet show, big business, foreign interference and corporate greed. If you are fed-up with the status quo, you are looking for a lot more than an Obama or a Huckabee. Just have a look. Inform yourself, and then start processing Dr. Paul's message. Do it for your kids and theirs.

Massive Illegal Immigration

The Bush administration has done immeasurable damage to our nation with its "open borders/amnesty" immigration policy. Forty percent of all illegal aliens domiciled in the U.S. arrived here since January, 2008. The truth is the federal government refuses to secure this nation's borders or enforce our labor and immigration laws. As a result of this situation America is being overrun and overwhelmed by what can only be described as a foreign invasion. It is now up to the individual states to crack down on this clear and present danger threat of massive illegal immigration using their constitutional police power.

Not-for-Profit Group "Non-Partisan?" Don't Make Me Laugh!

The writer makes the mistake of confusing "partisan" with a Democratic/Republican leaning. Let's reduce it to its root meaning of one who chooses a side of an issue or battle on which to fight. Obviously, these professional do-gooders have sided with the illegal aliens, AGAINST the taxpayers and citizens. Would you say that MALDEF, LaRaza, or the ACLU are "non-partisan?" Sure, they CLAIM to be, but that doesn't make it so. It's up to journalists to cut through the smokescreen and get to the truth. The writer failed on that count.

The Destiny of America

Never before has the destiny of America been more at stake than at the present time in history. This isn't an exaggeration. With talk of the Security and Prosperity Partnership(for the already wealthy), the treasonous merging of the U.S. with other nations, and the massive illegal invasion of a foreign nations people, who are causing massive wage depression across the U.S.-- Americans are being severly tested. History will record if we passed this test or failed miserably.

illegal immigration legislation

Its about time our elected officials in the state legislature passed some laws on the issue of illegal aliens confronting us. Arizona and Oklahoma has show us the efficacy of of getting a handle on illegal immigration by compelling illegal employers to ensure their employees have a right to be here. If we remove the jobs magnet and the public benefits they will leave!

This Legislation is Overdue

With an estimated 100,000 plus illegal aliens currently in Indiana this legislation is way overdue. Hoosier small business owners deserve better than to have to compete against those employers who intentionally employ illegal alien labor as a part of their business model. This law, modeled after the Arizona and Oklahoma laws, will require that businesses verify that prospective employees are entitled to work in the U.S. No more paying people under the table, no more not paying workmen's compensation insurance, no more slave labor wages for those in the "shadows". A fair and level playing field for all to compete on. That's all we're asking. Visit http://hoosiersforsecureborders.com for more information.

Indiana Should Lead Not Follow.

I want to thank those who are actually listening to their constituency on illegal aliens in our State. The State runs at a deficit, yet if figures are checked, if the benefits and other things we pay for illegals were to be deducted(STOPPED) the State would have a surplus. We applaud anyone of any party that listens to the people who put them in office. Seymour is a haven for illegals where temp services get them jobs in factories and employers of illegals run those who employ legal citizens out of business.Local law enforcement turns the other way. Wages and benefits across the State are declining while taxes are being increased. Indiana needs desperately leaders who listen and act on what they hear from their constituencies, We should be leading instead of following other States, yet we have weak leadership in the State Capital, Mitch Daniels will sell the State out from under us, he is greed motivated and driven, people are of no matter only dollars that magically disappear. Hoosiers are fed up with being invaded, paying for, and keeping illegal aliens who have no legal right to be here in our Country let alone State. Again I am thankful some one is representing the legal citizens .
