Indianapolis-based Baker & Daniels LLP has eliminated 17 more positions at its downtown and Fort Wayne offices, according to a source at the law firm, bringing the total of layoffs to 40 since December.

The latest round of cuts includes five associate attorneys in Indianapolis, as well as four paralegals, three administrative assistants and two marketing professionals among both locations. Also let go were the firm’s legal recruiting coordinator and the administrator of the Fort Wayne office, according to the source.

Managing Partner Tom Froehle confirmed the firm eliminated nine operational staff positions, but he declined to comment further about the total number of layoffs.

Froehle said the firm has implemented a wage freeze for all operational staff in an effort to cut costs.

Baker & Daniels in December cut 22 positions — 12 in Indianapolis and 10 in Fort Wayne. Another Indianapolis firm, Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, eliminated 25 employees last month, including 10 lawyers.

The local cuts reflect a national trend in which scores of firms across the country are terminating attorneys as business dries up in certain practice areas.

Besides Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Baker & Daniels has offices in South Bend; Washington, D.C.; and Beijing. It is the second-largest law firm in the city and has about 320 lawyers nationally.
